Ceasefire Agreement Between Israel and Hezbollah Marks Fragile Step Toward Peace

On 27th November 2024, a ceasefire was brokered between Israel and Hezbollah; A conflict that had lasted for 13 months and threatened Lebanon near and borders. The accord signed with support from the United States and with help from the United Nations is to stop any further fighting and encourage the use of words.

Fighting initiated in the course of the year 2023 had led to considerable losses of life and property in the involved countries and worsened the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon. The conflict also affected the relations of different regions and also received responses from different parts of the globe. As for the result of this move, UN Secretary-General, António Guterres called the development part of the ‘first ray of hope’ towards peace in the deeply divided area.

According to the cease fire conditions the two parties are expected to refrain from using force and discuss the long standing problems like border security, prisoner exchange and humanitarian access. However, the agreement has been struck at a time with escalating conflicts in the region, Gaza and Syria, which has made it even harder to sustain the fragile peace in the region.

This ceasefire has received applause from the global community as a big push towards de-escalation of violence in the Middle East but as scholars have warned this depends on diplomacy and compliance to the accord. The United Nations and United States is expected to be in the forefront in supervising and assisting in the shaky peace process.
