India successfully tests K-4 submarine-launched nuclear missile from INS Arighaat

India has reportedly conducted a successful missile test, on Wednesday 27th November off the Vishakapatnam coast, of its solid-fuelled K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) from the 6000-tonne nuclear-powered submarine INS Arighaat.

Previously the K-4 missile had only been tested from submersible platoons, it was tested for the first time from INS Arighaat, which makes it a key milestone for India’s naval capabilities. This was a part of India’s broader effort to enhance its strategic defence posture. The test results would soon be carefully analysed to determine whether the missile met its intended parameters.

INS Arighaat was recently commissioned into service on August 29, making it India’s second nuclear powered submarine. The submarine is equipped to carry nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles, known as SSBNs in naval parlance. INS Arihant, India’s first SSBN, was armed with K-15 missiles of 750 km range while INS Arighaat can carry K-4 missiles, which are more advanced and have a strike range of 3500 km, thus marking a substantial upgrade in naval nuclear deterrence.

This missile test also indicates the ongoing expansion of the country's nuclear submarine fleet, which allows it to maintain a continuous sea-deterrence thus playing a key role in strengthening India’s defence capabilities against emerging security threats.
