India's Multi-Billion Dollar AI Push

By Aman Kumar

India is aggressively orchestrating a massive dual expansion across hardware manufacturing and digital infrastructure to establish itself as a primary global hub for artificial intelligence. Backed by government incentives and sovereign initiatives, the country is coupling local semiconductor fabrication with an unprecedented surge in high-density computing capacity.

$20 Billion Semiconductor Strategy: Under the Semicon India initiative and the approved Semicon 2.0 framework, India has committed over $20 billion across 12 approved semiconductor projects covering fabrication, assembly, testing, and packaging (ATMP) units. This long-term industrial framework is designed to secure silicon sovereignty, reduce reliance on fragile supply chains, and build native chip-making resilience.

National AI Compute Layer: Supported by the IndiaAI Mission, the government is democratizing access to enterprise-grade compute. The sovereign strategy focuses on rolling out subsidised access to tens of thousands of GPUs and TPUs while developing sovereign foundational AI model clusters to fuel domestic research, start-ups, and strategic technology development.

Hyperscaler Expansion: Global tech giants are accelerating cloud infrastructure commitments across key corridors. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has expanded its planned infrastructure investment to over $21 billion by 2030, while Microsoft has committed $17.5 billion toward cloud-AI scaling and technical skilling, supported by deep regional network investments from Meta.

Domestic Conglomerate Bets & Capacity Boom: Indian conglomerates like Reliance Industries and Adani are deploying billions into hyperscale, green-powered AI data center campuses to ensure native data residency. Consequently, India’s installed data center capacity is projected to surge from ~1.2 GW toward multi-gigawatt scales by 2030, driven almost entirely by AI training and inference workloads.

Summary: India’s multi-billion dollar push into chipmaking and AI infrastructure has unlocked a major industrial shift. Driven by state-backed incentives and massive data center commitments from Reliance, Adani, Amazon, and Microsoft, the country is building an end-to-end ecosystem—from silicon fabrication to high-density compute—to secure technological sovereignty and power the global AI economy.
