NASA warns of an asteroid strike, concerned about Earth's readiness

NASA is concerned about a predicament in which an asteroid could hit Earth on July 12, 2038, with a 72% probability of being deadly. A retired planetary defense officer at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., named Lindley Johnson said, "The exercise's initial circumstances presented participants with challenging uncertainties."

Milestones and progress in technology
Using data from NASA's DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) mission was also a big deal for the exercise. It was a key step toward protecting the world. DART, which is famous for successfully showing how kinetic impactors can be used to change the path of an asteroid, shows how technology has improved to protect Earth from possible hits.

Getting ready for the future with NEO Surveyor
Because of the need to find things early, NASA is making work on NEO Surveyor, an infrared space telescope that will be launched in June 2028. NEO Surveyor is to make it much easier for Earth to find nearby objects, which will lower the risks of possible impacts.
