Union Cabinet Approves ₹4,600 Crore Semiconductor Projects, Creating Over 2,000 Direct Jobs

By Pearl Rana

In a landmark decision underscoring India’s push towards technological self-reliance, the Union Cabinet has approved four semiconductor projects with a combined investment of ₹4,600 crore. These projects fall under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), a national initiative designed to promote innovation, manufacturing, and advanced packaging in the semiconductor industry.

Two projects will be established in Info Valley, Bhubaneswar (Odisha). The first, led by SiCSem Pvt. Ltd. in collaboration with the UK’s Clas-SiC Wafer Fab Ltd., will set up India’s first commercial compound semiconductor fab, with a production capacity of 60,000 wafers annually. These wafers are critical for next-generation technologies, including electric vehicles, solar inverters, railways, and defense systems. The second Odisha project, backed by 3D Glass Solutions (3DGS), will focus on advanced packaging technologies such as glass interposers and 3D heterogeneous integration (3DHI), supporting applications in high-performance computing, AI, photonics, and telecom.

In Andhra Pradesh, ASIP Technologies, in partnership with South Korea’s APACT, will set up a unit specializing in assembly and packaging for mobile devices, set-top boxes, and automotive electronics, with a planned annual output of 96 million units. Meanwhile, in Mohali (Punjab), Continental Device India Ltd. (CDIL) will expand production of high-power semiconductor devices such as MOSFETs, IGBTs, and Schottky diodes components vital for EVs, renewable energy infrastructure, and industrial automation.

Together, these four projects are expected to transform India’s semiconductor ecosystem. With over 2,000 direct jobs and several thousand indirect opportunities, the initiatives will not only boost employment but also strengthen India’s ability to build a secure, resilient, and advanced semiconductor supply chain. Experts believe this move marks a technological leap for the country, enabling it to compete with East Asian manufacturing hubs while advancing national priorities like Digital India, Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
