“If you need constant motivation for it, it’s not your thing. Your need is your motivation!”

Echoes Club interviewed Mr Sarthak Malhotra, presently a 4th-year student majoring in Biotechnology at Thapar Institute, is an inspiration for many of his fellow batchmates and juniors. He transitioned from 136kg to 79kg in 2 years. Presently, he is a fitness expert at SABFIT.
Q- What motivated you to undergo such a massive transformation?
A- It was my keen interest in sports from the very beginning which got strained in class 12th due to my jam-packed study schedule, abated metabolic activities and a perplexed diet. I used to have constant lower back pain and blood clots in my calves. So, I customized my diet plan with a dietician, started working out and soon my body started transforming.
Q- How did you prioritize other activities with your regular fitness training?
AI joined AIESEC in my freshman year; got promoted as the Vice President. I got into the Volleyball Team but was asked to quit gym as it was plunging my flexibility. My priorities were clear as day so, I left the team, the VP position and started my hustle again at the gym.
Q-How did you manage your diet in college?
A- It all depends upon your will power and dedication because you always have a healthy alternative. And at an outing with friends, I never really refused to eat anything but I used to compensate for those calories in my other meals of the day. Compensation and knowledge were my go-to mantra while managing my diet.
Q- What tips would you give to the readers for a healthy lifestyle?
A- Two most important things are keeping a check of your steps and calories per day. I advise everyone to download a step calculator app and keep regular tabs on the same. A very less know fact is that 20 steps amount to loss of 1 calorie, so you complete 10,000 steps, you burn 500 calories in a single day which is sufficient to keep you fit.
Q- How does the transition from being under a trainer to now being registered fitness coach feels like?
A- Being a registered fitness coach really feels good. I remember getting a call from a senior, who was placed in Amazon, during the lockdown. He called me and asked me to work with him. Later, he referred me to a guy, who was a fitness coach in Canada. He wanted to form a team of dieticians, cross-fitters, bodybuilders, coaches and so on. The main motive of this was to provide above par solutions to all fitness enthusiasts of this country through a platform which included live streaming, personalized diet plan and many other solutions to stay healthy. As the current scenario of India's fitness training fraternity is quite haphazard, I thought this initiative would change the outlook of people in terms of fitness. Since the lockdown, home workouts were in trend, so we created a website called SABFIT. I started getting business from it and I really liked my day-to-day work by helping people stay fit.
Q-Do you feel there is a change regarding physical fitness in India right now with more people taking it seriously?
A- Totally! Let me share a personal experience, when I started going to the gym, I used to notice that a lot of people taking up fitness seriously. Though I was the only one going to the gym from L-hostel among first-year students. But with the advent of time, I have noticed that now the students who are currently in the first or second year are really passionate and know the correct technique of various exercises. Recently, a boy from second-year approached me to gain the right knowledge regarding gym. I enrolled his name at SABFIT and he recently got a sponsorship from a sports company.
